Chapter 1: On the Road with Scott & Sharla

Scott and Sharla trace the experiences, conversations, and partnerships that shaped CircleBridge. Their road time becomes a space for reflecting on practice rat

Relationships before techniques

The chapter invites readers to recognize that facilitators bring their own stories into every room. Professional skill grows alongside the willingness to examine personal history, assumptions, and uncomfortable experiences. An institution may ask for a program or a deliverable, but the work begins by hearing the people who live in that setting. Relationships make it possible to discover what a community already knows and what it needs next.

A practice to try

Write three moments that shaped how you understand difference. Identify whose voice is absent from that account. Invite a trusted colleague to share a formative moment, with permission to pass. Listen before discussing strategies.

School or classroom

Use a brief personal story to explain why a lesson matters to you; invite students to respond privately or aloud.

University or college

In an induction seminar, invite faculty and students to examine the educational experiences that shaped their expectations.

Organization or community

Begin a partnership conversation by asking what the community has already tried and what its members want you to understand.
