Understand difference developmentally
Denial may miss deeper differences. Polarization organizes difference through judgments of “us” and “them,” including defense and reversal. Minimization emphasizes commonality and can obscure meaningful differences, particularly when dominant norms become the default. Acceptance recognizes patterns of difference and commonality. Adaptation involves shifting perspective and behavior in ways appropriate to the context. The authors bring stories and vulnerability to the debrief so development can be approached without shame. These descriptions are a reflective framework; reading a guide or answering journal questions does not produce an IDI score or diagnosis.
A practice to try
Notice a recent moment when you assumed your own practice was universal. Ask what meaning the practice has for someone else. Plan one adjustment and reflect on the result.
School or classroom
Review whether equal treatment actually provides equitable opportunities to participate.
University or college
Examine assumptions about office hours, classroom speech, and what counts as academic engagement.
Organization or community
Discuss whose habits are treated as normal in policies and team routines.
Reflection questions from the book
Reflecting on Your Place in the Continuum
Think about the continuum discussed in this chapter, from Denial to Adaptation. Where do you believe you currently fall on this continuum, and what life experiences have shaped your position?
Understanding Polarization in Context
The chapter describes polarization as a state where differences are judged, leading to division or conflict. Reflect on a time when you or someone you know was in a state of polarization. How did it affect communication or collaboration, and what could have helped shift the dynamic?
Moving Beyond Minimization
Minimization focuses on commonalities but can sometimes overlook the richness of diversity. Have you experienced a situation where minimization limited creativity or meaningful connection? What steps could have been taken to move beyond minimization in that context?
The Role of Storytelling in Building Trust
The chapter emphasizes the power of storytelling during IDI debriefs to foster vulnerability and trust. Reflect on a personal or professional experience where storytelling helped bridge differences. How can storytelling be used more intentionally in your current relationships or work?
