Chapter 3: Supporting Every Student: Kendra’s Story

Kendra’s story centers on responding to students’ circumstances and individual needs. Her professional journey and her encounters with cultural difference revea

Support the person in front of you

The account resists a simple progress story. When people feel worn down, practices that once felt natural may become harder to sustain. Kendra’s use of common ground helps preserve relationships, while her story also opens questions about when shared humanity can obscure important differences. The practical invitation is to combine personal support, cultural awareness, reflection, and care for the educator. A change in an assessment score should be approached through context and conversation rather than treated as a verdict about character.

A practice to try

Choose one learner whose situation you do not yet understand. Ask what is helping and what is making participation difficult. Agree on one concrete adjustment and a time to review it.

School or classroom

Adapt a check-in, deadline, or communication method around a learner’s actual circumstances.

University or college

Ask an advisee what support they can realistically use, rather than assuming an existing service meets their needs.

Organization or community

Review whether a uniform staff support policy creates different burdens for different people.

Reflection questions from the book

Navigating Challenges and Growth

Kendra reflects on how her scores in the IDI dropped during a particularly challenging period in her life. Think about a time when you felt overwhelmed or worn down by external challenges. How did it affect your ability to engage with others or remain true to your values? What strategies did you use (or could you have used) to navigate that period of difficulty?

Finding Common Ground

Kendra chose to focus on minimization as a way to preserve relationships and find common ground, even with people who fundamentally disagreed with her. Reflect on a time when you had to make a conscious effort to maintain a relationship despite deep differences. How did you navigate that tension? Were there moments where finding common ground felt easier or harder?

Personalizing Support for Others

Kendra emphasizes the importance of meeting her students where they are and understanding their individual needs. In your personal or professional life, how do you tailor your interactions to meet the unique needs of those you work with or care for? What challenges do you face in doing this, and what strategies have been effective in overcoming them?

Balancing Advocacy and Self-Care

Advocating for diversity and inclusion, as Kendra does, can sometimes feel exhausting, especially when met with resistance. Reflect on a time when you felt the emotional weight of advocating for something important to you. How did you balance your passion for the cause with the need to protect your own energy and well-being? What lessons from Kendra’s story resonate with you in this regard?
