Compassion includes boundaries
The chapter gives readers permission to examine a familiar contradiction: valuing connection does not require unlimited access to oneself or one’s family. Boundaries can protect the conditions under which a relationship is possible. Mia’s account also raises questions about polarization and reversal when people feel hurt by a community to which they belong. The goal is to understand how experience shapes engagement, while honoring the person’s agency. Trustworthy spaces make room for difficult stories without requiring a participant to justify private pain.
A practice to try
Write a boundary using an “I” statement: what you can participate in, what you cannot, and what you will do if the limit is crossed. Rehearse it with someone you trust.
School or classroom
Make clear that a student may decline personal disclosure and still participate meaningfully.
University or college
Give students choices about sensitive personal topics in reflection assignments.
Organization or community
Separate an invitation to dialogue from the expectation that staff tolerate degrading treatment.
Reflection questions from the book
Navigating Boundaries and Inclusivity
Mia shares the paradox of maintaining inclusivity while setting boundaries to protect herself and her family. Reflect on a time when you had to prioritize boundaries in your life. How did you reconcile the tension between remaining open and protecting your well-being? What lessons did you learn from that experience about balancing these seemingly opposing needs?
Responding to Judgment or Hurt Within Your Own Community
Mia describes the pain of facing judgment and harm from her own religious community and close relationships. Have you ever experienced a similar sense of conflict or betrayal from within a community you belong to? How did you handle that experience, and what strategies helped you navigate the emotional challenges it brought?
Embracing Difficult Growth
Mia’s journey highlights how some of the hardest challenges in life—like setting boundaries and navigating polarization reversal—can lead to profound growth. Think about a time when you faced a particularly difficult or painful situation that ultimately helped you grow. How did that experience shape who you are today, and what tools or insights did you gain from it?
Creating Spaces for Trust and Openness
Mia emphasizes the importance of creating safe spaces for dialogue, like Circles of Trust, where people can share openly without fear of judgment. Reflect on a space or relationship in your life where you have felt safe to express yourself fully. What made that space or relationship feel safe? How can you create similar spaces for others, either personally or professionally?
