Explore the concept
Learn About questions ask what the speaker teaches about a place, tradition, history, or experience. Learn From questions invite listeners to consider connections to their own lives. Neither replaces the other. Content needs accuracy and context; reflection needs openness and personal agency. The combination helps an Elder interview become more than an information clip. It also avoids making personal resonance the measure of another culture’s truth. Students can distinguish what the speaker said from what they discovered about themselves.
A practice to try
For an interview, ask “What did this speaker explain?” and “What does this teaching invite me to reconsider in my own life?” Keep the two responses distinct.
