Hidden voices and narrative agency

Ask whose experience is missing and who gets to interpret it.

Explore the concept

The Green Siblings Project shows how a public historical account expands through less visible family experiences. Narrative agency means that people have a meaningful role in telling and interpreting their own lives. An oral history project can repeat old exclusions if the questions, editing, or audience are decided entirely by outsiders. Readers can examine whose story receives attention, whose contribution is minimized, and how a contributor can review the account. A fuller history emerges through multiple situated perspectives rather than one universal story.

A practice to try

Review a familiar lesson or organizational history. Identify one missing perspective and find a first-person source that can complicate the account.
