Acceptance

Recognize meaningful patterns of both difference and commonality.

Explore the concept

Acceptance involves appreciating that other people’s practices may be coherent within a context different from one’s own. It goes beyond tolerating an unusual habit or celebrating visible diversity. The practical question becomes what a practice means to the people using it and how that meaning affects the relationship. Understanding a perspective does not settle every ethical or practical disagreement. The reader can remain accountable for decisions while recognizing that their own experience is not the only starting point.

A practice to try

Ask how someone understands respect, participation, or support in the setting you share. Compare meanings without deciding immediately which is better.
