Inner work

Examine the stories, assumptions, and reactions you bring to a relationship.

Explore the concept

Inner work makes room for an honest relationship with oneself before asking others to be vulnerable. The book connects this reflection to the quality of interpersonal trust. A technique can change what we say while leaving our assumptions untouched; inner work asks what our words and reactions reveal. It includes noticing discomfort, recognizing formative experiences, and taking responsibility for one’s next response. The purpose is not perfect self-knowledge before engagement. Reflection continues as new relationships reveal what we have not yet understood.

A practice to try

Think about a moment that produced a strong reaction. Describe the event without interpretation, then name the story you told yourself. Write one alternative account you could explore.
