Explore the concept
The chapter describes the difficulty that can occur when a vulnerable circle flows straight into a transactional interaction. Participants may still be relying on the circle’s listening agreements while others have already shifted into ordinary discussion. A closing gives everyone a common understanding of what comes next. Confidentiality and respect continue, while the mode of engagement changes. This practice is especially useful when a staff retreat includes both personal reflection and institutional planning. It makes the distinction visible rather than expecting people to infer it.
A practice to try
Say “We are closing the reflective circle now. After a pause, we will move into planning, where proposals and feedback are welcome.” Keep personal stories out of that business discussion.
